October 26

Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of us finding out I was pregnant. For those of you who don't know the story, here it is:

Around mid-October 2007 I was cleaning out under the sink in the bathroom and I found an old pregnancy test from when we were first trying to get pregnant, before we even started our unsuccessful fertility treatments. The test was at least three years old and had an expiration date of November 2007. Well, if it had been November or December I probably would have just tossed it. But, since it was October and the test hadn't expired yet, I decided to use it at the end of the month, right before I was due to start my period (or so I thought, I wasn't really keeping track of all that anymore). Why, you ask, would I do such a thing? I really don't have an answer, I'm just weird and didn't want to throw away a perfectly good unused test. So Saturday the 27th, I woke up around 8 and decided to take the test. Bill had been out really late the night before, he had been at his monthly poker game, and although I remember telling him I was going to take the test, he didn't remember. I don't remember this next part, but Bill says I said, "Bill, this thing says I'm pregnant." He had no idea what I was talking about, but it woke him up! We spent the day laughing about how it was either a false reading because the test was bad (it was about to expire!) or I had some weird disease/disorder, because I couldn't possibly be pregnant- I was 40 and couldn't get pregnant! But, just to be sure, we bought another two pack, and both of them came back positive as well. We were both in a state of shock and panic and the possibility of being pregnant, and I called the doctor first thing Monday morning, went in Monday afternoon, and didn't even have to have a blood test to confirm the pregnancy, the urine test was positive. I still can't believe that one year later, we have such a happy, healthy and sweet little boy!

John has his six month check up/immunizations on November 17. He may get his flu shot then as well, although we don't know if he'll be able to since his adjusted age will only be 4 1/2 months then. We also found out that John is not eligible for Synagis, which is a medication to protect against RSV.
RSV is respiratory syncytial virus and is the #1 cause of hospitalization in babies under a year. It is especially dangerous to preemies born under 35 weeks and other high risk infants, and a severe case can lead to pneumonia and bronchitis. Most children get RSV before their second birthday, and in most it just appears as a moderate to severe cold. Even though John was born at 34 weeks, he is not eligible for preventative treatment because: a) he didn't have any respiratory problems as a preemie and was breathing on his own almost right away; b) he isn't exposed to school age children or other infants/toddlers on a regular basis; c) some other reason I can't remember because of my swiss cheese memory. So, we'll just have to be careful and not let sick people around him this winter.

Anyway, John was around kids earlier this week- we took him Addison's fundraising night at Stevie B's pizza. He loved the attention! Wednesday I stayed home because I had a blocked milk duct (very uncomfortable, bordering on painful at times) and the best treatment is frequent nursing, warm compresses, and rest, none of which I can do at school. Bill's parents came for the afternoon on Saturday.

October 18

Haven't updated the blog in a while, I know! It's not like I've been busy or anything....

Nothing exciting has been going on, except the usual baby stuff, which is exciting in itself. The little man has been getting bigger, of course, about 13 lbs, 7 oz, and is also expanding his repertoire of sounds. Once he gets a new sound, he practices it regularly for a couple of days. It is very cute.

Last weekend we went to a breakfast buffet at the Chick-Fil-A Dwarf House restaurant near us. They have sit down service (yes, sit down!) and you can order burgers (yes, burgers!), and on Saturday they have an all you can eat breakfast buffet until 1. Since I can eat breakfast for any meal, we went for lunch and ate a ton. It was delicious. We also went by Babies R Us and exchanged a three stage seat thing; we actually bought one Friday night but it was missing some parts, so we had to go back out and exchange it. John will sit it in for about 10 minutes before he gets cranky- he likes the toys that are on the tray.

John also has an odd sense of humor. Wednesday we were watching Jeopardy and John was sitting on his daddy's lap. Bill gave an answer to a clue, and John thought it was hysterical and has been laughing at the phrase ever since. "What's the phrase??" you ask..... well, it is "Chicken Fried Steak". We have no clue why John thinks it is funny, but if you say it a certain way, he cracks up. Even if you say it in a regular voice, John smiles at it. The other day he was laughing so hard and arching his back with glee at the way Bill was saying "chicken fried steak."

Thursday we took our friend Jim out for his birthday dinner. John was very cute and then fell asleep. Friday I took the day off to go to the eye doctor and then hang out with my boys. I took the younger of the boys to my school for a visit at the end of the day so the kids in my class could see him, and so all the teachers who wanted to see him could.

The weather is much cooler today than the past couple of days. It is nice and I'm hoping it stays cool with highs only in the 70s or 60s. John has some cute clothes that we'd like to have him wear before he outgrows them!

Today's pictures: John in his Halloween jammies, a gift from his auntie RoRo last year when we first found out we were pregnant- they say "I want my Mummy"; John today in one pair of corduroy overalls, this pair a hand-me-down from his friend Ryan (see blog from July).

New Video part two

Here's part two of the video. It's not as long as the first but cuter in my opinion.

New Video!

Here's a video we took about 20 minutes ago- John being very talkative and laughing, until he sees the camera.....

This is part one, I'll post part two maybe later this week.

Nothing New

Nothing new going on here. John continues to grow, although his growth has slowed down some. We've got him on a pretty good routine, and he is so sweet and easy to take care of. He gets fussy at times, but usually it is when he is hungry or tired. Both of those are easy fixes! Anytime we take him out, he is great and so happy.

Our weather has finally started to change, and with the cooler weather, we have been taking more walks in the afternoon after school gets out. John usually starts out awake but ends up snoozing, but he really enjoys the walks while he is awake.

We went out for a quick dinner last night and ran into a girl I teach with at Addison- she just had a mega-baby girl in September (9 lbs, 2 oz or something like that!) and is now 5 weeks old and looking to be about the same weight as John. It seems everyone I know has those big babies! The wife of the PE teacher at our school is pregnant, and they found out they are having a boy, which gives me someone to give baby clothes to. However, if they also have a mega-baby, all the Newborn sized clothes I already gave them won't fit. Oh well, not everyone can be as lucky as us and have the perfect baby!

Speaking of perfect babies, today's pictures are: 1) John at a couple of days old, still on the 2nd floor NICU where the nurse-baby ratio is higher; this was the first time we were able to put him in clothes and take him off the bed warmer. 2) The same preemie outfit next to an outfit John can currently wear. 3) John today getting bigger and cuter by the minute: in his crib smiling at Daddy; in his swing looking at his mobile (the tassels are making a shadow on his head); in his swing which is moving so the picture is just his head; looking at his giraffe blankie.
